Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our water-taxi service for hiking, hunting, and Great Walk huts and tracks, Stewart Island/Rakiura.

Yes — some hunting huts can only be accessed by water taxi. Beyond that, a water taxi can be invaluable for a pick-up or drop-off to shorten your overall trip. The vast majority of Stewart Island's huts and tracks can be walked to, but the tracks are not to be underestimated. Making time estimates based purely on kilometres or miles can prove to be a costly mistake. For example, a popular pick-up point is Freshwater River Hut for those who have walked from Mason Bay or completed the Northwest or Southern Circuit — the final stretch back to Oban is known to be very tough on tired legs. Or you may simply want a head start and wish to be dropped off at a hut of your choice!
This depends entirely on which hut or destination you wish to reach. Some Great Walk hut transfers can be as low as $60 per adult for larger groups, while transfers to more distant huts such as Christmas Village can be as low as $100 per adult for larger groups.
Yes — the more people in your booking, the lower the per-person price. We are also happy to hear your enquiries and help make your trip happen. Whether you are a large family group on a budget, a visiting school group, or a research team, please reach out and we will do our best to make your adventure possible!
Yes, we can help! Whilst we do have minimum numbers to make trips viable, we can offer you a spot in an existing group booking to keep costs at a per-person rate. If you need a specific time and date and are travelling alone, we can also run the water taxi just for you at the minimum fare — and if other people book onto the same trip, we will refund you 50%.
You can visit the Rakiura Department of Conservation website, or drop into the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre on Stewart Island. We can also help — we move a large number of hikers, hunters, trampers, day-walkers, and Great Walk enthusiasts, and receive constant updates on hut and track conditions. Feel free to call or email us any time!
Booking in advance is recommended. We can also customise times to suit you.
If we deem the weather conditions or forecast to be dangerous, we will cancel the booking and you will receive a full refund. Please note, Stewart Island does receive a lot of rain and wind at times — be sure to bring clothing for all conditions. We can provide up-to-date forecasts to help you make informed decisions.
