From here one can walk a connecting loop track through lush forest onto pristine beaches. We recommend taking a picnic, and suitable clothing.

Ocean Beach & Forest walk is for those who wish to somewhere far less busy than other locations. Despite being a favourite of locals, it is rarely visited, and you will most likely be the only ones there.

Everything you need to know before your Ocean Beach & Forest Freedom-Walk, Stewart Island/Rakiura.

We offer a dedicated water-taxi service from Golden Bay Wharf. This transfer takes approximately 20 minutes each way and follows the coastline to/from Little Glory, where your freedom walk starts and ends. Points of interest along the way include Ulva Island, The Old Neck, and Little Glory Bay. We land at a wharf so there are no wet feet. You can book online or call us if you need specialised times.
If you want to get off the beaten track and experience something different, we highly recommend this walk. It is far less visited than Ulva Island — chances are you will not see anyone else while you are there. Explore another part of Stewart Island, home to sealions, penguins, kiwi, and more!
Approximately 1.5–2 hours to complete the whole loop track from Little Glory Wharf, through to Ocean Beach, and back through the forest and little bays along the way. The track is very well marked and easy to follow — locals will tell you to take your time, as there are plenty of stunning views and picturesque spots to rest, and most people complete the walk quicker than anticipated.
For this walk we do not recommend a guide. The tracks are very well marked and our skipper will give you plenty of relevant information before you set off.
There may be some parts that are a little muddy after heavy rain, but normally nothing that feels impassable. Our team can give you an up-to-date report on track conditions.
Booking in advance is recommended. We can also customise times to suit you.
Discounted fares increase as group sizes increase:
  • 1–2 adults — $100 per person
  • 3–4 adults — $95 per person
  • 5–7 adults — $80 per person
  • 8–9 adults — $70 per person
If we deem the weather conditions or forecast to be dangerous, we will cancel the booking and you will receive a full refund. Please note, Stewart Island does receive a lot of rain and wind at times — be sure to bring clothing for all conditions. We can provide up-to-date forecasts to help you make informed decisions.
