Port William Hut

This hut is part of the North West Circuit and links to North Arm Hut. We also recommend this as a day walk. From the road’s end, Lee Bay you can do this in 3–4 hours, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 4h 30m–5h 30m. Our watertaxi can bring you to or from there in approximately half an hour.

North Arm Hut

This hut is also part of the North West Circuit and connects to Freshwater River Hut and Port William Hut. Also highly recommendable as a day walk. You can walk there from Fern Gully road end in 4h–4h 30m, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 4h 45m–5h 15m. Our watertaxi can bring you to or from there in approximately half an hour.

North West Circuit using a Water Taxi Service

Below are destinations on Stewart Island that offer scenic views and access to various huts and tracks. You can reach them by walking or taking a water taxi, depending on your time and budget. Here are some details for each location: 

Freshwater River: Connects to Masons Bay Hut, North-Arm Hut, and Fred's Camp Hut. You can walk there from Half Moon Bay main village in 11 to 12 hours, or take a water taxi in 40 minutes. The water taxi service is High tide dependent. 

Port William: Connects to North Arm Hut and the North West Circuit huts. You can walk there from Lee Bay road end in 3 to 4 hours, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 4.5 to 5.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a water taxi in 30 minutes.

Bungaree: Connects to Port William Hut and Christmas Village Hut on the North West Circut. You can walk there from Lee Bay road end in 6-7 hours, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 7-8 hours. Our Watertaxi can get you there in 40 minutes.

Christmas Village: Connects to the North West Circuit huts and is the closest hut to the start of the Mt Anglem/Hananui summit track. You can walk there from Lee Bay road end in 11.5 to 12.5 hours, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 13 to 14 hours. You can also take a water taxi in 1 hour.

Fred's Camp:

It's a great place to stay if you want to explore the Rakeahua Hut and the Freshwater Hut. You can access it from Fern Gully road end or from Half Moon Bay main village, but be prepared for a long walk of 10 to 12 hours. Alternatively, you can take a water taxi that will get you there in 30 minutes or less.

Freshwater River:

Connects to Masons Bay Hut, North-Arm Hut, and Fred's Camp Hut. You can walk there from Half Moon Bay main village in 11 to 12 hours, or take a water taxi in 40 minutes. The water taxi service is High tide dependent.

Rakeahua Hut:

A remote and scenic destination for adventurous trampers. It can be reached from either Fern Gully road end or Half Moon Bay main village, but both routes are long and challenging, requiring 15 to 17 hours of walking. Alternatively, you can book a water taxi transfer that takes about 40 minutes one way, depending on the tide and North Arm Hut: 

This hut is also part of the North West Circuit and connects to Freshwater River Hut and Port William Hut. You can walk there from Fern Gully road end in 4h–4h 30m, or from Half Moon Bay main village in 4h 45m–5h 15m. You can also take a water taxi for a 40-minute ride.
